Home Is Where the History Is

Prairie House Inn was originally built in 1900, according to Clackamas County Cultural Resource Survey, and given it's historical name Moody-Eckerd House. This was the first home in Molalla to have water and electricity.

Ira and Dora Moody are thought to be the original owners/builders and little is known of them at this time. William T. Eckerd acquired the property in 1906 and with his son, Rolla, delivered mail with horses to Free Daily Routes 2 and 3 from the location at 524 E Main Street. Horses were stabled in a barn once located behind the house.

The Eckerd's remained in the home until the mid 1950's with only two other owners living in the home before it was acquired in 2004 by Tootie and Nate Smith and converted it into a bed and breakfast inn.

Prairie House Inn is named for the design of the first "prairie house" by a creative group of architects in Chicago about 1893 known as the Prairie School. The plans of this design could easily be found in a Sears and Roebuck catalogue and spread westward. This style is one of the few indigenous American styles lasting two decades. After that, the influence faded as Frank Lloyd Wright heavily influenced the Prairie School designs. Today Prairie House Inn boasts its original old growth Douglas fir siding, flooring and millwork refinished to it's original luster.

The stately Prairie House Inn has been painstakingly restored back to its original glory keeping in mind that modern day commercial features have been added to accommodate it's guests. Historical paint colors were used to complement the design as well as furnishings from the era. Prairie House Inn has six bedrooms each with a private bath, queen size beds, DSL hook-ups and air conditioning. A large dining room, parlor and even larger living room, which can accommodate larger groups, are available. Each bedroom is decorated in a theme to reflect Oregon's rich heritage and the surrounding area history.
